Abstract:

Background and Objectives: Pulse oximetry is the most common technique for monitoring hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO2). Different colors and brands of nail polish may cause disturbance in the reading and interpretation of oxygen saturation. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different colors of nail polish on oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximeter. Methods: Thirty healthy students with SpO2≥95% and without obvious problems in nail bed and peripheral perfusion in ordinary room air, participated in this clinical trial. Each volunteer sat in a chair for 10 minutes, maintaining the whole body at rest; then, the SpO2 baseline of clean unpolished nail beds of all 10 fingers was measured and recorded. After this phase, the participants were asked to use each of 10 colors of nail polishes randomly and unrepeatedly to polish one of their fingernails. Nail polish was applied in two layers. After drying the nail polishes, the SpO2 was measured again. Data analysis was performed by statistical tests of Kolmogorov-Smirnov, paired t-, and Wilcoxon tests. Results: Orange, pink, and purple nail polish had no effect on SpO2 (p>0.05), while other colors induced a statistically decrease in SpO2 (p<0.05), but this was not clinically significant (<1.2%). Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that nail polish has no clinical effect on SpO2 measures by pulse oximeter in healthy subjects. Therefore, there is no need to spend time and money to clean nail polish from individual’s nails

the comparison between the impacts of henna and nail polish on pulse oximetry among healthy women

background & aim : pulse oximetry is a frequently used and standard non-invasive method for monitoring oxygen (o2)-saturation in blood. many factors including dark skin and pigmentation may effect on rate of saturation of the blood oxygen absorbed by pulse oximetry. the effect of nail polish and/or henna color on blood oxygen has not been yet identified and the present study has been carried ou...

The Effect of Abdominal Touch on Nutritional Tolerance in Premature Infants: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trail

Background The most common cause of death during neonatal period is prematurity. Nutritional tolerance is very important in this period. If during this period the problems of feeding the preterm infant are not resolved, chronic disorder occurs in normal growth. Materials and Methods In this randomized controlledclinical trial we selected 60 preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit...

Nail polish does not significantly affect pulse oximetry measurements in mildly hypoxic subjects.

BACKGROUND The effect of nail polish on pulse oximetry measurements in non-hypoxic subjects has been studied extensively. Some studies found that nail polish decreased pulse-oximetry (S(pO(2))) values, whereas others found no effects from nail polish. OBJECTIVE To determine if nail polish affects S(pO(2)) measurements in mildly hypoxic subjects. METHODS At high altitude, 5 investigators, wh...

Comparison of antiplatelet activity of garlic tablets with cardio-protective dose of aspirin in healthy volunteers: a randomized clinical trial

Objective: Some of the adverse effects of aspirin including peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding and aspirin resistance compelled researchers to find a suitable alternative with fewer adverse effects. In this clinical trial, we aimed to find the effective antiplatelet dose of garlic. Materials and Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) was conducted on 62 healthy volunteer...
